BT Net start

Dedicated Programmes uses BT Net Start to connect to the internet.

As a small IT Support company it is vital that DP have a good internet connection. Up to 80% of their work can be carried out by using remote connections to clients servers and workstations. When the company was setup in 1998 ISDN connections were all that were available but as broadband became available to more and more of their customers it became imperative that they had a permanent internet connection.

ADSL is not yet available on the Oncote exchange where DP are connected but BT have a service called Net Start which is essentially an economy leased line for small businesses. The BT Net Start product comes in 3 speeds. 64K, 256K, and 2Mb. DP started with a 64K connection and has since upgraded to 256Kbps. It might not sound very quick compared to 2Mb ADSL but the NetStart service is very well run and contention is much lower so the line feels quick and is perfectly adequate for most work.

The costs are high. £5000 per anum for the 256K service but if you've got to have it...

DP uses a variety of software, mostly open source, such as Linux, VNC, RDP and SSH to connect to various systems and also uses VOIP to route phone calls over the internet (Try their London number - it will be answered by someone on the Staffordshire Moors! 0207 517 4963)

For further details contact BT or try their website (It's almost impossible to find any useful info in there)
